The reigning Olympic champion also secured his place in the Paris Olympics 2024 in the same event.
Neeraj Chopra, DP Manu and Kishore Kumar Jena scripted history by reaching the finals of the men’s javelin throw at the ongoing World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest on August 25 (Saturday). This is the first time in the competition’s history that three Indian javelin throwers have qualified for the finals.
While reigning Olympic and Diamond League champion, Neeraj Chopra, showed his domination to secure automatic qualification with his first attempt, DP Manu and Kishore Kumar Jena finished sixth and ninth respectively to enter the finals. Chopra also confirmed his place in next year’s Paris Olympics 2024 with that sole attempt, having breached the qualification mark of 85.50m.
He set the field ablaze with a phenomenal season best throw of 88.77m in his first attempt and secured his spot in the World Athletics Championships final with style. DP Manu soon followed suit, making a remarkable improvement in his second attempt with an 81.31m throw that propelled him to the third position in Group A standings, just shy of the automatic qualification mark.
Later in the Men’s Javelin Throw Group B, Kishore Kumar Jena took the stage and displayed his mettle. He kicked off with an impressive throw of 80.55m, showcasing his strong start in the competition. In his second attempt, Kishore Jena experienced a slight dip in performance and could only manage a throw of 78.07m and his final throw resulted in a distance of 77.12m.
But with a best attempt of 80.55m, Jena was positioned on the brink of the qualification mark holding the fifth spot in Group B.
It was a commendable performance by the Indian athletes as Neeraj Chopra, DP Manu and Kishore Kumar Jena all secured spots in the javelin throw finals. Their impressive performances marked a successful outing for the Indian contingent in the event.
Neeraj Chopra’s nonchalant yet extraordinary performance in the first attempt was undoubtedly the highlight of the day that marked his dominance in the field. Chopra secured his spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics as well with this remarkable throw of 88.77m.
