World Athletics Championships 2023: India's Squad and Schedule
This edition will feature the largest ever Indian contingent with 28 athletes
India’s participation in the 2023 World Athletics Championships set to take place in Budapest, Hungary from August 19 to 27 marks a significant milestone. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) will field a robust 28-member team which notably encompasses five female representations and a men’s relay team for the forthcoming global competition. This achievement stands as the largest-ever representation of Indian athletes in this international event.
An intriguing twist emerged when the Sports Ministry, rather than the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) revealed the team composition which will be led by India’s star javelin thrower and Olympic champion, Neeraj Chopra. Presently, elite Indian athletes are engaged in focused training sessions across Europe to get acclimatized to local weather conditions in preparation for the impending Budapest World Athletics Championships.
Indian athletes who have qualified for World Athletics Championships 2023:
Qualification for Budapest 2023 was achieved by athletes and teams through three distinct avenues. They either fulfilled the stringent world athletics championship’s qualifying criteria by excelling in a sanctioned event within the designated qualification period. Alternatively, participants earned their spots by virtue of their world rankings at the conclusion of the qualification timeframe. A third pathway involved achieving qualification through commendable finishes and placements in designated events during the qualification window.
Regarding the participation structure, each nation can enter a maximum of three qualified athletes per event with relay teams eligible to submit one qualified team. Moreover, wild card entries are exclusively reserved for reigning world champions and victors of select high-priority athletics events from the previous year are also permitted.
For the men’s javelin throw event at Budapest 2023, India is set to field a trio of athletes. Neeraj Chopra secured his place in the competition during the previous year’s Lausanne Diamond League by surpassing the entry standard of 85.20m with an impressive throw of 89.08m. Chopra’s entry into the world championships was granted via a wild card attributed to his status as the reigning Diamond League champion in this discipline. Joining him are DP Manu and Kishore Kumar Jena who earned their spots based on their standings in the global rankings.
