Indian Athletes to miss World Athletics Championships 2023
Five Indians after qualification are set to miss the competition
Several Indian athletes have opted not to participate in the World Athletics Championships 2023 which is scheduled to take place in Budapest, Hungary from August 19 to 27. The absence of these talented athletes is indeed a significant loss for the Indian squad.
The reigning Asian shot put champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor had to withdraw from competition due to a lingering groin injury he sustained during the recent Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok where he secured the gold medal with a remarkable 20.23m throw. Although he clinched victory, Toor’s remarkable performance was marred by the injury preventing his full recovery in time for the world championships. He had initially qualified for the global event by setting a new Asian record with an impressive 21.77m throw at the inter-state championships held in Bhubaneswar this past June.
Regrettably, this will mark the second consecutive world championships that Tajinderpal Singh Toor will miss out on due to injury. Last year, he was forced to withdraw from the Eugene edition at the last minute, again due to a groin injury.
Meanwhile, Tejaswin Shankar has opted to withdraw from the upcoming world championships in order to redirect his focus towards the highly anticipated Asian Games 2023. Elaborating on his decision, the Indian athlete stated, “Participating in the World Championships only to achieve jumps of 2.16 or 2.20m and returning without accolades holds little appeal for me. Instead, I am choosing to invest my efforts in preparing for the Asian Games, where my prospects of securing a medal are much more grounded.”Tejaswin Shankar, a versatile athlete who also engages in men’s decathlon secured his place in the men’s high jump event at the world athletics championships through world rankings. He holds the distinction of being India’s national record holder in the high jump discipline.

Additionally , Priyanka Goswami who holds the national record in the women’s 20km race walk and the accomplished runner KM Chanda have both made the decision to skip the Budapest 2023 event in favor of the Asian Games. Javelin thrower Rohit Yadav has unfortunately been sidelined from the contingent due to an elbow injury sustained last month.
The Indian mixed relay contingent composed of Muhammed Anas, Himanshi Malik, Aishwarya Mishra, and Amoj Jacob were also excluded from the World Athletics Championship in Budapest, Hungary. This likelihood stems from their inability to elevate their ranking beyond the 17th position.
