So far none of the Indian athletes have managed to reach the finals of their respective events.
National record holder in women’s 100m hurdles, Jyothi Yarraji, failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the ongoing World Athletics Championships 2023 after finishing seventh in her heat. Fellow Indian athlete, Krishan Kumar also finished seventh in men’s 800m heat as India’s disappointing run continued in the World Athletics Championships.
Yarraji, gold medallist in Asian Championships, took part in the women’s 100m hurdles heats. There were a total of five heats with the top four from each heat and four fastest athletes qualifying for the semi-finals. Yarraji, who holds the national record with a timing of 12.78s, competed in heat Four and finished seventh.
Starting from lane 5, Jyothi started strongly although she couldn’t sustain her momentum. Ultimately, she completed the race with a timing of 13.05 seconds. Unfortunately, this performance was not sufficient for her to qualify as one of the fastest losers. The heat, in which Jyothi competed in, was comfortably won by Olympic champion Camacho-Quinn.
Once again, another disheartening conclusion for a capable Indian athlete as Jyothi Yarraji finished the 100m hurdles heats in the 29th overall position.
Krishan Kumar fails to reach 800m semi-finals
Krishan Kumar featured in men’s 800m. The event consisted of a total of seven heats and the top three from each heat, along with the three fastest athletes progressed to the semi-finals. Krishan Kumar participated in heat 1. Having secured the Asian Athletics Championships silver medal, Kumar was expected to show his abilities against the world’s finest competitors.
He had a sluggish start and found himself second to last during the initial half of the opening lap. As the second and final lap commenced, he managed to climb to the sixth position briefly. Unfortunately, he slipped back to seventh soon after and concluded the race in that same position. His final timing is recorded at 1:50.36s and fell short of the semi-final qualification mark.
