Asian Marathon Championships is the first major competition this season.

Indian athletics soared to new heights in 2023, witnessing historic moments with Neeraj Chopra clinching the title of the first-ever senior world champion in any track and field event. The country’s athletes also made headlines for a remarkable medal tally at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

As the calendar turns to 2024, the athletes will aim to sustain the momentum with the Paris Olympics looming as a significant milestone. Building on 2023’s groundbreaking achievements ,the Indian athletics squad will enter the new year poised for continued excellence with aspirations to contribute to the nation’s flourishing athletic legacy.

The upcoming Paris Olympics 2024 slated for July 26th to August 11th will be the pinnacle of sporting events this year. Particularly crucial for Indian athletes is the first half of the year where they aim to secure quotas for the highly anticipated Summer Games with athletics set to take place from August 1 to 11.

As of now, the qualification and ranking window for all individual events is open and will continue until June 30, 2024. Marathon athletes, however, have until April 30th, 2024 to meet the qualifying criteria. This timeframe intensifies the focus of athletes, pushing them to either surpass the Paris 2024 standards or elevate their rankings within their respective events in the quest for the Olympic tickets.

The Indian athletes will kick off the year with the Asian Marathon Championships in Hong Kong, China, scheduled for January 21st. Subsequently, they will be gearing up for the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in February and the World Indoor Athletics Championships in March.

In addition, the Diamond League meets stand as the other major highlight of the 2024 Diamond League season. The season kicks off with the Xiamen leg in China on April 20th and reaches its climax with the two-day Diamond League Finals in Brussels, Belgium on September 13th and 14th.

Following an impressive performance in 2023, the spotlight will once again be on Indian relay teams as they gear up for the World Athletics Relay in the Bahamas set to take place in May.

This year, India will play host to two international athletics competitions. The SAFF Junior Athletics Championships are scheduled to unfold in Chennai, Tamil Nadu from April 12 to14. Later in the year, the senior SAFF championships will take center stage in Ranchi, Jharkhand from October 4 to 6.

In the junior category, key events in 2024 include the Asian Junior Championships scheduled in April at Dubai, UAE. To cap off the year, junior athletes will have their eyes on the World Junior U-20 Athletics Championship scheduled in August. In addition to these events, Indian athletes will participate in a range of World Athletics Continental Tour meets and domestic competitions organized by the Athletics Federation of India across the entirety of the year.

The domestic Indian athletics calendar for 2024 will feature key competitions such as the Indian Grand Prix series and the 27th National Federation Senior Athletics Competition in May. Following this, the prestigious 63rd National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships are slated for June 27 to 30 in Panchkula. The focus then shifts to the 39th Junior National Athletics Championships in Calicut from November 7th to 11th, providing a fitting finale to a year filled with spirited competitions.
