She bettered her own record by 0.07 seconds.
Femke Bol of the Netherlands continued her dominance in the women’s 400m by smashing her own world indoor record at the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2024 in Glasgow on Saturday.
The 24-year-old clocked 49.17 seconds to win the gold medal, lowering her previous mark of 49.24 that she set at the Dutch national indoor championships in February. She also has become the first woman to run under 49.20 indoors.
Bol led from the start and never looked back, leaving her teammate Lieke Klaver in second place with a time of 50.16, also a personal best. Alexis Holmes of the United States took the bronze in 50.24, another personal best, while Britain’s Laviai Nielsen finished fourth in 50.89, also a personal best.
Femke Bol’s record run sets up a mouth-watering clash with American Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, who is the outdoor world record holder and Olympic champion in the 400m hurdles, and also a formidable contender in the 400m flat.
McLaughlin-Levrone, who did not compete in Glasgow, has a personal best of 48.74 in the 400m, which she ran at the 2023 World Championships in Eugene, where she also won the 400m hurdles in a stunning 50.68, breaking her world record.
