The Indian contingent achieved their best-ever medal tally at the Championships.

The Indian contingent bagged 29 medals, including 7 gold, at the Asian U20 Athletics Championships 2024 held in Dubai which concluded on Saturday. This performance surpassed the 19 medals — six gold, seven silver and six bronze — India achieved at the previous edition held in Yecheon, South Korea in 2023.

Added to the 7 gold was 11 silver and 11 bronze medals which aided in positioning India in the second place of the medal standings. China emerged as the leading nation by winning a total of 16 gold, 10 silver and 3 bronze medals. Japan also put up a commendable display capturing 7 gold, 4 silver and 8 bronze medals to finish third.

For the first time since 1996, the Indian contingent has claimed the second spot in the medal standings at the Asian U20 Athletics Championships.

The final session of the Championship concluded with Md Atta Sajid contributing a bronze medal to the Indian contingent in the long jump event with a leap of 7.52 meters.

However, there was a little dent to India’s happiness unfortunately. The women’s 4x100m relay team initially secured the bronze medal; however, they were subsequently disqualified due to a baton exchange occurring outside the designated zone during the third leg.

The women’s 4x400m relay team consisting of Anushka Dattatray, Kanista Teena Maria, Sangeetha Dodla and Sandramol Sabu raised above that situation and went on to secure the gold medal by crossing the finish line with a time of 3:41.50.

Additionally, the men’s 4x400m relay team including Abiram Pramod, Navpreet Singh, Nikhil Suhas Dhake and Aman Choudhary clocked a time of 3:09.36 and secured the silver medal.
