The National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships 2025 took place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai from August 20 to 24, with India’s top athletes competing in the five-day event. The event saw Vishal TK setting a new National Record in the men’s 400 event.

Several meet records were broken, and athletes also registered their personal bests. A few athletes also earned some crucial Road to Tokyo ’25 points to qualify for next month’s World Athletics Championships, scheduled from September 14 to 21.

West Bengal’s Moumita Mondal bagged two gold medals at the Inter-State Athletics Championships between August 20 to 24. She clocked her personal best timing of 13.22 seconds to win the gold medal in the women’s 100m hurdles event. Moreover, she registered a best jump of 6.27m to win the women’s long jump title.

Javelin thrower Rohit Yadav registered his personal best of 83.65m at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships 2025 on Sunday to strengthen his position in the Road to Tokyo rankings. He clinched the gold medal in the event, while Sachin Yadav finished second with a best throw of 83.20m.

India will have four javelin throwers at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo next month. Neeraj Chopra has received a wildcard entry as the defending World Champion, while Rohit, Sachin Yadav, and Yash Vir Singh will qualify through the World Rankings quota.

#3 Dhanalakshmi Sekar

Dhanalakshmi Sekar has clinched three gold medals on her return from a three-year doping ban. She clocked 11.36 seconds in 100m and 23.53 seconds in 200m to bag the gold medal in both events.

Additionally, she won gold in the women’s 4x100m relay event with the Tamil Nadu team, clocking a time of 44.73 seconds. The quartet of Dhanalakshmi Sekar, Pavithra R, Abhinaya Rajarajan, and Angel Silvia M, shattered the meet record of 45.40 set by them last year.

#2 Santoshkumar Tamilarasu

Tamil Nadu’s Tamilarasu S won two medals in the 64th edition of the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships. He won gold medal in men’s 100m final with a meet record timing of 10.22 seconds.

His timing is also the third-fastest by an Indian athlete after Animesh Kujur and Gurindervir Singh. The previous meet record of 10.27 seconds was held by Gurindervir Singh, who set it in 2021.

Tamilarasu also won the silver medal in the men’s 4×100 relay event with Tamil Nadu, registering a meet record timing of 39.80 seconds. The team comprised Arun C, Ragul Kumar G, and Varun Manohar apart from Tamilarasu.

They bettered their own meet record of 39.88 seconds, which was set during the 2022 edition of the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships.

Quarter-miler Vishal TK shattered the national record in the 64th edition of the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Chennai. He clocked a time of 45.12 seconds to erase Muhammed Anas Yahiya’s NR of 45.21 seconds, set in 2019.

En route to the National Record, Vishal also broke Muhammed Ajmal’s meet record of 45.51 seconds that he achieved in 2023. The Tamil Nadu-born athlete, who is currently training with Jamaican coach Jason Dawson, is the fastest Indian quarter-miler.
