Tejas Shirse narrowly missed qualification in men’s 110m hurdles finals.

India’s disappointing run at the World Athletics Championships 2025 stretched into the third day, as all four athletes in action, including Murali Sreeshankar and Parul Chaudhary, fell short of qualifying for their respective finals in Tokyo.

Parul Chaudhary and Ankita took part in the women’s 3000m steeplechase heats, Murali Sreeshankar featured in the men’s long jump, while Tejas Shirse was in action in men’s 110m hurdles heats.

India’s day started with Parul and Ankita eyeing spot in the women’s 3000m steeplechase final.

Ankita lined up in Heat 1 but could not find her rhythm, finishing 11th with a timing of 10:03.22. Her season’s best is 9:31.99, achieved in Bochum in July 2025.

Meanwhile, in Heat 2, Parul started strongly and stayed close to the lead pack. At the 1800m mark, she was only a second behind, running in eighth place.

However, she faded in the last kilometres and eventually finished 9th with 9:22.24, more than 10 seconds off her personal best.

Only the top five runners from each heat qualifies for the finals, meaning both the Indians Ankita and Parul fell short of the final of the women’s 3000m steeplechase.

All eyes then turned to Murali Sreeshankar in the men’s long jump. Returning from an injury layoff that kept him out of the Paris Olympics, the 26-year-old carried plenty of expectations.

But his series of 7.78m, 7.59m, and 7.70m jumps fell short of the 8.15m automatic qualification mark. His best attempt of 7.78m wasn’t enough to place him among the top 12 finalists.

Sreeshankar was coming with a season-best of 8.13m achieved back home at the India Open in August.

The day wrapped up with Tejas Shirse in the men’s 110m hurdles heats. He got off the blocks well and ran a solid race, finishing with 13.57s in his heat.

But unfortunately, the national record holder with best personal time of 13.41s, ended 29th overall, just missing out as only the top 24 qualified.

What made it more painful was the margin. Shirse lost the last qualifying spot to Job Geerds of the Netherlands who finished in 13.51s, only 0.06s ahead of the Indian.
