Neeraj Chopra at World Athletics Championships 2025: Men's javelin throw event timings, dates, live streaming details

Neeraj Chopra will defend his title at World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo.

India’s star boy Neeraj Chopra is back on familiar ground as he gets ready to defend his world title in men’s javelin throw at the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo. The event will see India’s biggest athletics star defend his javelin title in the city where he won Olympic gold four years ago.

Chopra though is not India’s only representative in the event. For the first time, four Indian javelin throwers will compete in men’s javelin throw at the World Championships. Apart from the defending champion Neeraj Chopra—who got wild card entry, Sachin Yadav, Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh are the other Indian javelin throwers in fray.

Neeraj’s last competition was the Diamond League 2025 Final in Zurich, where he had to settle for silver with an 85.01m throw. Germany’s Julian Weber stole the show that day with two monstrous throws beyond 90m.

But the 90m barrier is not a dream anymore for Neeraj. He has already breached that earlier this season in Doha with a stunning 90.23m throw.

However, it won’t be easy in Tokyo. Neeraj will face his old rival Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan for the first time since the Paris Olympics, where Nadeem won gold with a record-breaking 92.97m throw.

Add in two-time world champion Anderson Peters and a red-hot Weber, former Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago in a star-studded field.

Still, Tokyo is special for Neeraj. This is where he became an Olympic champion in 2021, forever changing Indian athletics in javelin. Returning as the defending world champion this time, the Indian ace will be hoping for another golden memory on Japanese soil.

Men’s javelin throw event schedule, dates and timings

  • Qualification Group A: Wednesday, September 17 – 3:40 PM
  • Qualification Group B: Wednesday, September 17 – 5:15 PM
  • Final (if qualified): Thursday, September 18 – 3:53 PM

Athletes need to clear 85.50m to qualify directly for the final. If fewer than 12 manage to touch the qualification mark set by World Athletics, then the best 12 overall throwers will advance.

In the final, everyone gets three throws, after which the top eight earn three more chances. Then the single best throw decides the medals.
