This was Neeraj Chopra’s first-ever 90m throw in his javelin career.

Neeraj Chopra created history at the Doha Diamond League 2025 with a 90.23m attempt, his first-ever 90m or longer throw in a still young but decorated career. Chopra, who had never before managed a 90m throw, also bettered his own National Record (previous NR being 89.94m in Stockholm DL 2022) in a memorable night at the Suheim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha.

In pursuit of the elusive mark that he has been chasing since he first burst into the limelight in 2021, Chopra—who had started his 2025 season in South Africa with a best throw of 84.52m—registered an opening throw of 88.44m to take the lead and followed it with a foul throw on his second attempt.

His National Record of 90.23m throw came on his third attempt, and the Indian athlete threw 80.56m on his fourth attempt. Chopra finished this event with a final throw of 88.20m, registering three 88m+ throws in the event.

Despite his brilliant performance, the 27-year-old finished second in the event behind Julian Weber. The German registered throws of 83.82m, 85.57m, 89.06m, 88.05m, and 89.84m on his first five attempts. He then registered a massive throw of 91.06m on his final attempt to secure the top spot in the event, leaving Neeraj Chopra behind.

Meanwhile, Grenada’s Anderson Peters secured the third position in the men’s javelin throw final. His bet attempt of 85.64m came via his first throw, enough on the night to fetch him the second runner-up place.

Kishore Jena, the other Indian athlete in the fray, finished eighth in the competition with a best throw of 78.60m to register his season best. He started the event with a poor throw of 68.07m but improved with a 78.60m in his second attempt to qualify for the next round and stay in the top 8.

However, with a 74.80m and 77.28m throw in his final two attempts, Jena remained eighth and couldn’t go any further.
