Gurindervir Singh breaks eight-year-old national record in 60m.

Gurindervir Singh set a new indoor national record in men’s 60m on Day 2 of the 1st National Indoor Athletics Championships 2026 at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha on Wednesday, March 25.

The 25-year-old athlete clocked a timing of 6.60 seconds to shatter the indoor national record. The previous record of 6.69 seconds was held by V.K. Elakkiadasan, set in 2018.

Odisha’s Lalu Prasad Bhoi clocked 6.65 seconds to win the silver medals, while Nuzrat from Haryana finished the race in 6.71 seconds to clinch the bronze medal.

Three athletes were disqualified from the men’s 60m final for false starts. India’s fastest 100m athletes and fan favourite Animesh Kujur was one of the players to be eliminated after repeated false starts.

Odisha’s Dondapati Mrutyam and Karnataka’s Nehal Sagar were also disqualified for false start in a dramatic final.

Several athletes competed in the heats of the men’s 60m. Lalu Prasad Bhoi finished first in Heat 1 with a timing of 6.79 seconds, while Gurindervir secured the top spot in Heat 2, clocking a time of 6.82 seconds.

Animesh Kujur finished first in Heat 3, having finished the race in 6.81 seconds, while bronze medalist Nuzrat from Haryana clocked 6.73 seconds to finish first in Heat 4.

In the semi-finals, 16 players competed across two heats. Animesh Kujur (6.71s), Lalu Prasad Bhoi (6.72s), and Laukik Anant Melge (6.77s) qualified for the finals from Heat 1.

Meanwhile, Gurindervir (6.69s), Nuzrat (6.72s), Dondapati Mrutyam (6.74s), Nehal Sagar (6.88s), and Sarun Payasingh (6.88s) booked a ticket for the final from Heat 2.

The former 100m national record holder Gurindervir missed out on breaking the indoor national record in the semi-final round by 0.02 seconds. However, the Punjab-born athlete rewrote the record during the final to enter the record books.
