This is the first Indian Grand Prix of the 2024 season.
The Indian Grand Prix-1 2024 is scheduled to take center stage at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Bangalore, Karnataka, on April 30. This is the first Indian Grand Prix in the 2024 season and an important event on the Indian athletics calendar in the build-up to the Paris Olympics 2024, slated from July 26 to August 11.
Since the Paris Olympics are approaching, athletes will look to deliver record-breaking performances to secure the Olympic standard qualification mark. There will be in action in track events like 100m, 200m, 800m, 3000m steeplechase, and field events such as triple jump, high jump, javelin throw, long jump, and shot put.
One of the athletes to watch out for at the Indian Grand Prix-1 is none other than Hima Das. The three-time Asian Games medalist Hima Das will be making a comeback to the event in the 200m after the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) approved her to compete following a hearing reportedly held in the previous month. Athletes who are expected to give Hima a tough challenge are South Asian Games 2016 gold medalist Srabani Nanda, and V. K. Vismaya, a member of the Asian Games 2018 gold-medal winning 4x400m women’s relay team. Nanda has also been listed to compete in the 100m.
Two-time Asian Games and Asian Championships gold medalist Tajinderpal Singh Toor is another prominent name who will be entering the competition as the pre-favorite in the shot put.
In the triple jump, a high-voltage clash is anticipated between Commonwealth Games gold medalist Eldhose Paul and Asian Games bronze medalist Praveen Chithravel. Meanwhile, Mohammed Afsal, the Asian Games 2022 silver medalist, will aim for a dominating run in the men’s 800m at the first Indian Grand Prix.
Promising long jump sensation Shaili Singh who trains under the tutelage of the World Championships bronze medalist Anju Bobby George will also be making an appearance at the Indian Grand Prix-1. Some of Shaili’s top accomplishments include being a silver medalist at the World Athletics U20 Championships 2021 and Asian Athletics Championships 2023.
While the Asian Championships 2023 silver medal winner and national record holder Abha Khatua is another athlete to watch out for at the competition in the women’s shot put.
