Top five matchups to watch at Zurich Diamond League Final 2025

Former champion Neeraj Chopra will aim to reclaim the Diamond League trophy in Zurich.

The Zurich Diamond League Final 2025, scheduled for August 27 and 28, is one of the most anticipated track and field events for athletics fans. Athletes will compete for the prestigious Diamond League trophy across more than 30 disciplines.

While many top athletes will be aiming to defend their titles, other will have their eyes on a first-ever Diamond League crown. The Zurich Diamond League final is also the most prestigious meet of 2025 before the World Athletics Championships commence next month between September 13 and 21.

On that note, let’s take a look at top five matchups to watch at Zurich Diamond League Final 2025:

5) Julien Alfred vs Tia Clayton (Event – Women’s 100m)

Paris Olympics 100m gold medalist Julien Alfred is one of the biggest names who will feature at the Zurich Diamond League Final. The Saint Lucian sprinter has a season best of 1.75s over the 100m, which she clocked at the Stockholm Diamond League. 

However, one of the athletes who can challenge Alfred in the finals is none other than Jamaica’s Tia Clayton. Clayton, who returned to competition after suffering an injury at the Jamaican Championships which served as trials for the World Championships, collected victory at the Silesia Diamond League with a personal-best 10.82s.

This makes her one of the frontrunners for the 100m title in Zurich.

4) Emmanuel Wanyonyi vs Marco Arop (Event – Men’s 800m)

While the men’s 800m stands as one of the most competitive fields, Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Marco Arop are two middle-distance runners who have performed consistently well in the event. The reigning Olympic gold medalist Wanyonyi will face silver medalist Arop in a highly competitive Diamond League Final on Thursday.

Although Wanyonyi has been the more consistent of the two at Diamond League meets, with wins in London, Monaco, Stockholm and Oslo, Arop managed to defeat the Kenyan at the Grand Slam Track event founded by Michael Johnson.

3) Salwa Eid Naser vs Marileidy Paulino (Event – Women’s 400m)

The showdown between Marileidy Paulino and Salwa Eid Naser will be one of the key events to watch at the Zurich Diamond League final 2025. The two are currently the most dominant athletes over the 400m distance, but with Naser having lost her most recent 400m at the Lausanne Diamond League, Paulino may have the edge.

Moreover, Paulino has not lost a single 400m this season since placing third in the opening event at the Grand Slam Track in Kingston.

2) Neeraj Chopra vs Julian Weber (Event – Men’s Javelin Throw)

Among the field events, one of the most competitive matchups is set to be between India’s Neeraj Chopra and Germany’s Julian Weber.

Both athletes crossed the 90m mark for the first time in their careers this season, achieving the feat at the Doha Diamond League, where Weber won with a mammoth 91.06m throw while Chopra recorded 90.23m to finish second.

The two are expected to bring out the best in each other at the Zurich Diamond League set for August 28.

1) Noah Lyles vs Letsile Tebogo (Event – Men’s 200m)

The most anticipated showdown among track and field fans at the Diamond League Final will be between none other than the third-fastest 200m runner of all time, Noah Lyles and the current Olympic 200m champion, Letsile Tebogo.

While Lyles qualified for the event through a global wildcard, Tebogo earned his spot by finishing second in the overall Diamond League standings.

As of now, Lyles is the current global world leader in the 200m, clocking a 19.63s in the finals of the USATF Championships. Meanwhile, Letsile Tebogo isn’t far behind as he stands fifth in the list of top runners this season with a best of 19.76s at the Prefontaine Classic 2025.
