Murali Sreeshankar is alive in qualification race for the World Championships in Tokyo.

Murali Sreeshankar won the gold medal at the 64th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships 2025 in Chennai on Sunday, August 24. The Kerala-born long jumper registered a best jump of 8.06m to finish atop the podium.

He began his event with a 7.85m jump and followed it up with a 7.96m jump. Murali recorded his gold-medal-winning jump of 8.06m in his third attempt. His remaining three jumps were 7.80m, 7.96m, and 7.86m.

The recently concluded National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships was Murali Sreeshankar’s fifth event this season upon returning from a long injury layoff, which kept him out of action for almost two years.

Murali Sreeshankar will be eligible to qualify for the World Athletics Championships based on the World Rankings quota, as the Indian athlete competed in five events. He is expected to have 1196 points and might be ranked 36th in men’s long jump on the updated Road to Tokyo list that is due to be out shortly.

The athlete currently ranked 36th in the Road to Tokyo has 1195 points, and Murali is expected to surpass him and book a ticket to Tokyo for the World Championships, slated to take place from September 13 to 21.

Speaking of the men’s long jump final at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships, 12 jumpers took the field, including three from Karnataka, two from Tamil Nadu, two from Kerala, and one each from Bihar, Odisha, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh.

S Lokesh from Karnataka clinched the silver medal with a best jump of 7.71m, while Tamil Nadu athlete Swaminathan R bagged the bronze medal, courtesy of a 7.70m jump in Chennai on Sunday.
