Despite delivering his best-ever attempt, Neeraj Chopra finished second in Doha Diamond League 2025.

The long wait of a billion Indians and many others around the globe came to an end on Friday, as two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra became the first-ever Indian to breach the 90m mark in men’s javelin throw. He threw a personal best throw of 90.23m, finishing second at the Doha Diamond League 2025. Julian Weber clinched the top spot with a massive throw of 91.06m.

Chopra, 27, from Khandra, Haryana started off with a gigantic throw of 88.44m, making him the World Leader. While the second attempt was declared as null and void due to a foul, he breached his own national record (89.94m at the Stockholm Diamond League 2022), in the next attempt amassing a throw of 90.23m.

Neeraj thus managed to get a huge load off his back, as an entire nation had been waiting with bated breath for this moment, for a number of years.

The reigning World Champion couldn’t make an improvement after this, attaining a distance of 80.56m next, followed by another foul throw. He achieved another commendable throw, measuring 88.20m, in the final attempt.

German athlete Julian Weber crashed the party in the final round, jumping to the top spot with a throw of 91.06m. However, this did not douse the spirit of netizens, as they expressed their delight on social media.

Meanwhile, Kishore Jena, the other Indian in the fray, had yet another disappointing outing. While a distance of 78.60m in his second attempt was enough to gain him qualification for the fourth and fifth throws, he couldn’t muster up a better performance, thus ending eighth on the table.

Here are the reactions, as X erupted in praise for Neeraj, who is on track to become the most decorated Indian in sporting history!
