A ligament tear brings a premature end to Chopra’s 2026 campaign
There was finally a sense that Neeraj Chopra was finding his rhythm in 2026. After a delayed start to the season and a long spell away from competition, the Indian javelin star had gradually begun to show signs of returning to his best.
His 85.69m throw in Doha was followed by an 85.83m effort and a silver medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games before he produced his best mark of the season in Lausanne.
That 88.05m throw on August 21 at Lausanne Diamond League was an important step forward. Chopra finished second behind Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, but the result offered encouragement ahead of the most important part of the athletics calendar.
He had also secured qualification for the Diamond League Final and was in contention for a place at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships.
Diamond League Final – Brussels
The second major competition he will miss is the Diamond League Final in Brussels on September 5. This absence is particularly unfortunate because Chopra had already done enough to earn his place in the season-ending competition.
Despite competing in only a couple of Diamond League meetings this season, Chopra accumulated 12 points and secured the sixth and final qualification spot in the men’s javelin.
His performance in Lausanne was crucial to that qualification, with his 88.05m throw moving him into the final qualifying spot.
The Brussels final would have given Chopra another chance to compete against the world’s best javelin throwers after a season focused on gradually rebuilding his competitive rhythm.
It would also have provided another potential meeting with Pathirage, who has emerged as one of the major stories in men’s javelin this season.
The Sri Lankan defeated Chopra in Lausanne and has consistently produced big throws throughout the year, adding another significant name to the group of athletes challenging at the top of the event.

World Athletics Ultimate Championship – Budapest
Chopra’s third major absence will be at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, scheduled from September 11 to 13. The inaugural competition has been introduced as a new season-ending event featuring many of the world’s leading athletes.
Chopra was in contention for a place in the men’s javelin field after his Lausanne performance, although his qualification had not yet been officially confirmed when he suffered the injury.
His withdrawal nevertheless means that the first edition of the Ultimate Championship will take place without one of the most recognisable athletes in world athletics.
The timing of Chopra’s injury makes the setback particularly frustrating. His 2026 season had already been shaped by his return from a lower-back injury, which delayed his competitive debut until June.
His performances in Doha and Glasgow showed gradual improvement, while Lausanne finally produced the kind of throw that suggested he was beginning to regain his rhythm.
The 88.05m mark was his best effort of the season and came just as the year’s biggest competitions were approaching. Instead of building on that performance, Chopra will now have to step away from competition once again.
Return timeline and what the future holds?
There is currently no confirmed timeline for his return. For now, the focus will be on rehabilitation and making sure the ankle injury is properly treated. Given the number of major competitions he has already been forced to miss, there is little incentive for Chopra and his team to rush his recovery.
His absence will undoubtedly be felt most strongly at the Asian Games, where Chopra was expected to lead India’s athletics campaign. But it also changes the picture internationally.
The Diamond League Final will be without one of its qualified finalists. Also, the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship will lose one of the sport’s biggest stars before its maiden edition even begins.
For Indian athletics, it is a significant loss. Chopra’s Olympic gold in Tokyo, Olympic silver in Paris and world championship title have made him the country’s most successful and recognisable track and field athlete. His presence at major competitions has become almost synonymous with India’s medal hopes in athletics.
Yet, his 88.05m throw in Lausanne also offered an important reminder. Even after a difficult start to the year and another period away from competition, Chopra was still capable of producing a world-class performance.
The immediate priority, however, is recovery and not another big throw or medal. Chopra’s 2026 season has ended earlier than expected, taking him out of three major competitions that were set to define the final months of the athletics calendar.
For an athlete who has repeatedly dealt with setbacks and returned to the biggest stages, the next challenge will be to ensure that his return from this one is given the time it needs.
