Tanya, Nirbhay Choudhary smash hammer throw National Records at Indian Athletics Final Series

Tanya Chaudhary will represent India in hammer throw at the Asian Games 2026
Nirbhay Choudhary and Tanya Chaudhary produced remarkable performances at the Indian Athletics Final Series in New Delhi on Thursday, with both athletes setting new national records in the hammer throw event.
Tanya, who is part of the Indian athletics contingent for the upcoming Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, won gold with a best throw of 68.35m at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
In the process, the Uttar Pradesh athlete broke the previous national record of 67.02m set by her state-mate Anushka Yadav. The latter had become the youngest national record holder in June but finished second on Tuesday with 66.34m. Tanya’s previous personal best was 63.91m.
Both Anushka and Tanya will compete in the women’s hammer throw event at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. India’s last Asian Games medal in hammer throw came in 2014, when Manju Bala clinched bronze (later upgraded to silver).

Meanwhile, Nirbhay Choudhary, representing Delhi, shattered a decade-long national record in the men’s hammer throw, with a best effort of 71.02m, surpassing the previous NR set by Neeraj Kumar (70.73m) in 2016.
Unfortunately, Nirbhay is not part of the Indian athletics contingent travelling to Japan. Damneet Singh, who will represent India in the event at Aichi-Nagoya Games, finished second with a best throw of 68.12m.
Elsewhere, the likes of Animesh Kujur, Vishal TK, Parul Chaudhary and Avinash Sable warmed up for the 2026 Asian Games with podium finishes in New Delhi.
Animesh beat National Record holder Gurindervir Singh (10.32s) and Rishiprasad Singh (10.33s) to clinch the top spot in the men’s 100m sprint, while Harita Bhadra won the women’s event with a timing of 11.22s.
Kujur also took the win in men’s 200m with a timing of 20.59s while Jishnu Prasad (20.63s) and Abhay Singh (21.04s) completed the podium.
Avinash Sable and Parul Chaudhary also showed their dominance on track winning the 3000m steeplechase event in their respective categories by big margins.
Sable finished at least 18 seconds ahead of the next best finisher, while for Parul the gap was even bigger as she finished with 9:22.49, more than a minute ahead of second-placed Prachi Devkar (10:28.35)
