Athletics is all set to have an event like never before. The World Athletics Ultimate Championships is making its debut, built around the simple idea of bringing the best athletes together for a compressed, high-intensity show.
Announced back in June 2024 as a biennial event slotted into years when the World Championships aren’t held, the competition will run for just three days, with almost every big name in the sport on a start list.
The inaugural championship will bring 381 athletes from 65 federations to Budapest, including Olympic champions, world champions, Diamond League winners and the leading performers of the 2026 season.
World champion Oblique Seville heads the men’s 100m, arriving as the fastest man in the field this season at 9.82 seconds, alongside Kenny Bednarek, Kayinsola Ajayi, Trayvon Bromell, Christian Coleman, Akani Simbine and Letsile Tebogo.
Olympic champion Noah Lyles, despite being the world leader at 9.79, will miss the race through injury. The women’s 200m, meanwhile, pits Olympic champion Gabby Thomas against world champion Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, while world leader Julien Alfred is focusing on the 100m in Budapest.
The middle-distance programme is equally loaded. The women’s 800m features Keely Hodgkinson, Audrey Werro and Femke Bol, while the men’s 1,500m brings together Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Josh Kerr, Cole Hocker and world champion Isaac Nader.
In the pole vault, Mondo Duplantis faces Diamond League champion Emmanouil Karalis, with Duplantis arriving after raising his world record to 6.31m this year.
