Neeraj Chopra is the only Indian to have a gold medal at World Athletics Championships.

The upcoming World Athletics Championships 2025 will take place in Tokyo from September 13 to 21. A 19-member Indian contingent will be participating. All eyes, however, will be on men’s javelin throw champion Neeraj Chopra.

For the first time ever, India will have four javelin throwers at the World Athletics Championships—Sachin Yadav, Yashvir Singh, Rohit Yadav, and Neeraj Chopra—who enters with a wild card as the defending champion.

However, the two time Olympic medallist had already cleared the qualification mark of 85.50m several times during his stellar 2025 season.

Neeraj heads to Tokyo after a narrow miss at the Diamond League Final in Zurich, where he had to settle for silver behind Germany’s Julian Weber.

This time in Tokyo, fans will witness the much-anticipated clash between Neeraj and his arch-rival Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan. This will be their first meeting since the Paris Olympics showdown, where Nadeem claimed gold and Neeraj took silver.

Meanwhile, Neeraj is already a two-time World Championships medallist. He bagged silver in 2022 (Eugene) and then clinched gold in 2023 (Budapest), becoming not only the first Indian to do so but also the first-ever Asian javelin thrower to win gold medals at the Worlds.

In fact, the 27-year-old is the only Indian athlete to have won more than one medal in the history of the World Athletics Championships. The only other Indian on the medal list is Anju Bobby George, who claimed a historic bronze in the women’s long jump at Paris in 2003.
