World Athletics Cross Country Championships 2024: Schedule, fixtures, India squad, live streaming details
The Championships are slated to start from March 30.
The World Athletics Cross Country Championships 2024 are scheduled to take place on March 30, 2024, at the Park of Friendship in Belgrade, Serbia. Belgrade has previously hosted prestigious competitions like the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2022, the European Indoor Championships 2017 and the European Cross Country Championships 2013.
The Indian contingent led by athletes such as Kartik Kumar, Gulveer Singh and Ankita Dhyani comprises three men and three women. A total of 485 athletes from 51 nations will participate. The senior individual races feature 245 athletes (138 men and 107 women), while the junior (U-20) individual races involve 187 athletes (95 men and 92 women). Additionally, 12 countries will compete in the mixed relay event.
Prize money for the Championships is as follows:
Senior men’s and women’s individual categories
- Gold: US$30,000
- Silver: US$15,000
- Bronze: US$10,000
Team event (both men’s and women’s)
- 1st place: US$20,000
- 2nd place: US$16,000
- 3rd place: US$12,000
Mixed relay (per team)
- Gold: US$12,000
- Silver: US$8,000
- Bronze: US$6,000
At the previous Championships (2023) held in Bathurst, Australia, Kenya emerged as the best nation on the medal table, winning six gold, two silver and two bronze medals. Ethiopia secured second place with a total of 10 medals (two gold, seven silver and one bronze).

India at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships 2024
Kartik Kumar, who bagged the silver medal at the Asian Games 2022 with an impressive performance of 28:15.38 in the 10000m, will be leading the Indian squad at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships 2024. Gulveer Singh, the bronze medalist at the Asian Games 2022 in the same event, will look to deliver a strong performance at the competition’s 45th edition.
Ankita Dhyani, who clinched the 58th National Cross Country Championships 2024 on January 15 with a time of 34:36, will spearhead the women’s challenge. Some other Indian athletes to watch out for at the event are Hemraj Gujjar in the men’s category, and Seema and Anjali Kumari in the women’s race.
At the previous edition of the World Athletics Cross Country Championships, the Asian Games 2022 gold medalist in the 3000m steeplechase Avinash Sable was the best Indian in the men’s race, finishing 35th (31:43) in the 10km on his senior debut. This was also the best timing among all Asian athletes who competed at the 2023 edition.
Parul Chaudhary, the 5000m champion at Asiad 2022, emerged as the best Indian female athlete with a 20th-place finish (35:39) at the event. It is worth noting that India have never won a medal in the history of the World Athletics Cross Country Championships.
