Shoputter Amandeep Singh Dhaliwal disappointed in the finals and was knocked out after the first three throws.
The Indian contingent started the World U-20 Athletics Championships by winning a historic bronze medal in the Mixed team relay 4x400m. The Indian quartet of Priya Mohan, Bharat Sridhar, Summy and Kapil were exceptional in the qualifiers. They exceeded expectations by finishing third in the finals. India came third behind Nigeria and Poland.
So it was indeed a great start for the Indian contingent at the World U-20 Athletics Championships. However, it was a rather forgetful second day for the Indian athletes.

Men's 400m hurdles
The day started with the Men's 400m Hurdles, involving Hardeep Kumar and Rohan Gautam Kamble. The two Indians were placed in different heats. Hardeep Kumar was in Heat 1 and despite a decent start, he stumbled into one of the hurdles and was down for some time. However, he did get up and finished the race but finished last.
Rohan Gautam Kamble was in Heat 5 of the 400m hurdles. He finished fourth in the heats with a timing of 55.00 and qualified for the next round as one of the best non-automatic qualifiers.
Men's 800m heat
Next up was the highly anticipated Men's 800m heat where India's Anu Kumar was in action. The young middle distance runner could only manage a fifth-place finish in his heats with a timing of 1:50.26. He had some luck when Ethiopia’s Ermiah Girma was disqualified as the Ethiopian finished fourth ahead of Kumar. However, that was also not enough to see him through to the finals. He missed the finals by a whisker as South Africa's Abednico Choba was the last automatic qualifier with a timing of 1:50:20.
Shotput
It brought an end to the day's morning session as everyone was waiting in anticipation for a sparkling performance from shotputter Amandeep Singh Dhaliwal. The Punjabi shotputter came sixth in the qualifiers and qualified for the finals and the Indian supporters had high hopes from the young field athlete.
However, Amandeep also flattered to deceive as he came up with a disappointing performance in the finals. His first two throws were fouls, which added pressure to the whole scenario for the youngster. His last throw was the only valid throw in the finals where he registered a distance of 17.08metres. However, it was not good enough as he languished in the bottom position. Amandeep exited after the first three throws as the bottom four athletes got disqualified.

The only good news from Day 2 at the World Athletics U20 Championship was Rohan Kamble's qualification to the next round of the 400m hurdles. Other than that it was simply a day to forget for the Indian contingent. The Indian fans will hope that Day 3 brings new luck for the Indian youngsters. Several top talents will be in action at the Kasarani Stadium tomorrow.
