Indian Sports Calendar October 2024: Women's T20 World Cup, World Championships, FIFA Friendlies, PKL and more

The women’s T20 World Cup will be among the biggest event in the Indian sports calendar this month.

September 2024 was one of the best months in India’s sporting history as the nation’s Paralympics contingent delivered an outstanding performance, collecting a total of 7 gold, 9 silver, and 13 bronze medals. They finished an impressive 18th overall in the Paralympic medal table.

Indian athletes will be aiming to excel in October as many big tournaments in cricket, archery, badminton, hockey, golf, shooting, tennis, table tennis, track cycling, and wrestling are all slated to be held. With this, let’s take a look at the Indian sporting calendar for the month of October.

Major events to follow in October in Indian Sports Calendar

Archery

The archery season will conclude with the World Cup Final 2024 at Tlaxcala, Mexico, where many prominent archers from the nation will be vying for medals.

  • October 19-20: Archery World Cup Final 2024

Athletics

Many zonal tournaments will take place in India in October, including West, East, North, and South Zone competitions. The National Junior Athletics Championships is also set to commence at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar, in October.

  • October 4-6: 35th West Zone Athletics Championships

  • October 6: National Open Marathon 2024
  • October 7-9: 35th North Zone Athletics Championships

Badminton

Indian shuttlers will compete in the Denmark Open (BWF World Tour Super 750), Arctic Open (BWF World Tour Super 500), and Hylo Open (BWF World Tour Super 300) events. PV Sindhu, the two-time Olympic medalist, will also be back in action at the Arctic Open.

Boxing

Young Indian boxers will aim to bring glory and laurels for the country at Budva in Montenegro.

Cricket

One of the prestigious tournaments happening in Cricket in October is the ICC T20 Women’s World Cup 2024. India’s best placement in the tournament was being crowned as the champion in 2016 and finishing as the runner-up in 2020.

Football

The Indian men’s football team will play two friendly matches – Vietnam on October 9 and Lebanon on October 12.

  • October 2: Tractor FC vs Mohun Bagan Super Giant (AFC Champions League 2)
  • October 6: Urawa Reds Diamonds vs Odisha FC (AFC Women’s Champions League)

  • October 23: Mohun Bagan Super Giant vs Al-Wakrah (AFC Champions League 2)

Golf

India will be hosting its 16th edition of the Women’s Indian Open at the DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurgaon, Haryana. Many prominent Indian golfers are expected to participate as a prize pool of US$ 400,000 will be up for grabs.

Hockey

The Indian men’s U21 team will compete in the Sultan of Johor Cup 2024, taking place in October this year. In the last edition, India bagged a bronze medal. On the other hand, the seniors will play a bilateral series against the Germany at the Major Dhyan Chand National stadium after a dominant show at the Asian Champions Trophy.

Kabaddi

Season 11 of the Pro Kabaddi League will start from October 18. A total of 12 teams will compete in PKL 11, which will be held across three venues respectively — Hyderabad, Noida and Pune. Puneri Paltan are the defending champions while Patna Pirates are the most successful team in PKL history with three titles.

Shooting

So far, the Indian junior shooters have impressed through their performance at the ISSF Junior World Championships Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun. They will hope to continue their golden run and finish as the table topper, with the tournament concluding in October. Meanwhile, the senior shooters will look for medal-winning shows at the season-ending ISSF World Cup Final Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun.

Table Tennis

Both Indian senior, junior, and youth paddlers will compete in multiple events including WTT Contender and Youth Contender events in October. One of the top tournaments where Indian athletes will be hoping to create an impression is the Asian Championships, scheduled in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Tennis

Rohan Bopanna, Sumit Nagal, and Ramkumar Ramanathan, are among the prominent names who will feature at the Shanghai Masters 2024, one of the premier tournaments taking place in October. Notably, the Indian doubles legend Bopanna will team up with Ivan Dodig since Matthew Ebden is presently on Davis Cup assignment.

Some more events in which Indian athletes will feature in October are Almaty Open, European Open, Stockholm Open, Vienna Open, and Paris Masters.

Track Cycling

A total of six cyclists will represent India at the World Track Cycling Championships slated to be held in Denmark. In sprint events, Ronaldo Singh, Esow Alben, Rojit Singh, and David Beckham have qualified, while Harshveer Sekhon and Meenakshi will compete in the endurance disciplines.

Wrestling

In October, both senior and junior Indian wrestlers will be in action at the World Wrestling Championships in non-Olympic weight categories and U23 World Championships. Notably, both the senior and junior championships are scheduled in Tirana, Albania.

  • October 28-31: World Wrestling Championships
