Goh Soon Huat-Lai Shevon Jemie pair lost their mixed-doubles semi-final against the top seeds.
The Malaysian men’s doubles pair of Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi are through to the final after defeating fourth-seed Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi in straight games at the Badminton Asia Championships 2023. The 2021 World Championships bronze medallist pair sealed the match 21-16, 26-24 and will now face the winner from the other semi-final clash. India's Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty face Chinese Taipei duo Lee Yang/Wang Chi-Lin in the second semi-final.
Ong Yew/Teo Ee started the match on a positive note by winning the first game 21-16. The Malaysian pair did not have any major hurdle to cross through until the second game, which did not start well for them. They trailed at the interval as the Japanese pair Takuro/Yugo swung the momentum in their favour.
However, the match turned dramatically at 14-18 with the Malaysian duo winning five straight points to take back the lead. This is also their second win against the Japanese pair at the Badminton Asia Championships.
Badminton Asia Championships 2023 Semi-Final Highlights: ONG Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi vs Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi
The WR 8 pair had a difficult path en route to the semis. They lost the opening sets in the first two matches of the continental championships but with experience on their side, they came back strongly. Their most memorable win was against the top-seed Indonesian pair of Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto.
While, Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi advanced to the final, it was not so good for the eight-seeded mixed doubles pair of Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie. They lost their semi-final clash to top-seed Chinese pair Zheng Si Wei and Huang Ya Qiong in straight games (11-21, 13-21). The Malaysian pair had no answers to the top seeds and never looked in control of the match throughout the two sets.
In men's singles, Loh Kean Yew became the first Singaporean to reach the final in men’s singles at the Asia Badminton Championships 2023 after defeating Lu Guang Zu in straight games 21-19, 21-15.
