Taipei Open 2023: HS Prannoy, Parupalli Kashyap advance to pre-quarterfinals
Mithun Manjunath and Akarshi Kashyap also faced defeats.
Indian top ranked men's singles player HS Prannoy and Commonwealth Games 2014 gold medallist Parupalli Kashyap won their respective opening round encounters on day 2 of Taipei Open 2023 (BWF 300). In the mixed doubles section, newly formed pair of Rohan Kapoor and Sikki Reddy progressed through after defeating compatriots Bokka Navaneeth and Priya Konjengbam in straight games.
A total of seven Indian players in the singles category (including men's and women's) lost in the opening round. WR 76 and 2022 Junior Championships silver medallist Sankar Muthusamy lost to seeded Kanta Tsuneyama in straight games. Upcoming stars, Mithun Manjunath and Kiran George put up a valiant fight against home favourite Chou Tien Chen and Hong Kong (China) Angus Ka Long respectively. The former was leading by four points in the decider (7-3) but couldn't capitalize on the lead against the experienced Chou Tien Chen.
Tanya Hemanth was the lone women's singles player to register a win with Aakarshi Kashyap and Ruthvika Shivani going down tamely. Tomorrow HS Prannoy is set to take on 2014 World Championships bronze medallist Tommy Sugiarto for a place in the quarter-finals while Tanya Hemanth will be up against top seed Tai Tzu Ying in the women's singles.
