Taipei Open 2023 RO16 Summary

India’s top ranked men’s singles player HS Prannoy advanced to the quarter-finals of Taipei Open 2023 by defeating WR 95 and 2014 World Championships bronze medallist Tommy Sugiarto in straight games (21-9, 21-17). Prannoy is the lone Indian to progress to the quarter-finals with all the remaining players losing their respective RO16 matches.

After a long break, Parupalli Kashyap returned to the BWF circuit (came in as a last minute replacement for Kodai Naraoka). The former Commonwealth Games gold medallist started the tournament on a bright note winning the opening encounter but lost to Su Li Yang (16-21, 17-21).

In the women’s singles, Tanya Hemanth was no match for former World No.1 and home favourite Tai Tzu Ying. The top seed finished the match inside 30 minutes to storm into the quarters.

Later in the day, men’s second seed Chou Tien Chen lost a close battle to country mate Lin Chun-Yi in three games (19-21, 21-11, 15-21). Chen played out a three-game encounter in the opening round against Mithun Manjunath yesterday but couldn’t close off the RO16 match today. On the other hand, sixth seed Kanta Tsuneyama went down to Malaysia’s Yeoh Seng Zoe (19-21, 15-21).

In the quarter-finals, world ranked ninth HS Prannoy will be up against fifth seed from Hong Kong Angus Ka Long. The former holds a slight upper edge in head-to-head records winning six matches with the latter winning five.
