India’s No. 1 HS Prannoy will face third-seed Kunlavut Vitidsaran in the men’s singles semi-finals of the BWF World Championships 2023 in Copenhagen, Denmark. HS Prannoy, who will be contesting his maiden BWF World Championships semi-final, would want to make it historic for himself and the country by winning the gold medal. Even though Kunlavut Vitidsaran has won the only match the two have played, it will be a tough match for him as Prannoy has been in terrific form.

The only time they clashed was in the All England Championships 2022 where the three-time Junior champion defeated Prannoy in three games (21-15,24-22).

In the BWF World Championships, HS Prannoy started his campaign in a smooth fashion as he faced no difficulties in winning his opening two matches in straight sets. In the Round of 16, Prannoy faced former world champion Loh Kean Yew and defeated him in thrilling fashion (21-18, 15-21, 21-19). The third game was a roller coaster and Prannoy kept his calm in the dying moments of the match and sailed into the quarter-finals.

Next, he had a humongous task of facing the World No. 1 and home favourite Viktor Axelsen. Having lost the opening game, Prannoy made a good comeback in the remaining two to confirm a medal for India at the BWF World Championships. By reaching the semis, he became only the fifth men’s singles player from India to win a medal in this tournament.

Kunlavut Vitidsaran, on the other hand, also sailed smoothly in the opening two matches as he just like Prannoy won in straight games. In the Round of 16, he faced a familiar foe in Lakshya Sen and defeated him in three games (21-14, 16-21, 21-13). After a close first half in the decider, Kunlavut upped his games as he won 10 out of 14 points after the interval.

In the quarter-finals, the Thai shuttler faced a tough challenge from Wang Tzu Wei. After losing the first game he made a good comeback to win the next two and reach back-to-back semis in this tournament. Kunlavut Vitidsarn, last year’s runner-up, would want to upgrade his medal this time.
