The Burmese secured a straight sets win over Mexican Haramara Gaitan.
History got scripted through the hands of young Burmese badminton sensation Thet Htar Thuzar on Tuesday morning when she became the first player from Myanmar to win a match at the BWF World Championships in this century. The 24-year-old shuttler played the first match of the day on Center Court where she triumphed over another young girl from Mexico, Haramara Gaitan by a scoreline of 21-13 21-19.
Thet has been playing on the BWF circuit for around 3-4 years and has been on a record-breaking streak for her nation, Myanmar. This is her third straight World Championships appearance, which is the most by any Burmese badminton player. She also participated at the Tokyo Olympic Games, where she went down in the group stages.
The 24-year-old Burmese shuttler is set to face Carolina Marin from Spain for a place in the quarter-finals and will seek to carry forward her achievement to the next level of the BWF World Championships. Michelle Li retired midway through the match after suffering from an injury. Thet earlier had defeated the elite badminton player from Canada at the Korea Open last year as well. Though she is ranked 61st in the world rankings, she holds a career-best ranking of 54, which she achieved in April this year.
Thet Htar Thuzar has earlier won eight titles on the BWF International Challenge/Series level and will aim to leave her mark at the ongoing Championships. The Yangon-born girl had badminton genes running in her family as her parents were once the top players from Myanmar. Coached by her father, she played the SEA Games at just the age of 12, which speaks of her huge potential in the game. Creating new milestones for the players back in her homeland, she will be looking to snatch the victory today against Li.
