World Champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn is a major absentee
The BWF China Open 2023 is scheduled to be held from 05-10 September, 2023 in China. The badminton action is back after a week's break post the BWF World Championships 2023. China Open 2023 is one of the four BWF 1000 event this season and also offers huge cash prize compared to other tours except the World Tour finals.
Close to nine players after entering the competition have announced their withdrawal from the competition due to several unforeseen reasons. Recently crowned world champion from Thailand Kunlavut Vitidsarn exited the tournament a day before the start and has been replaced by Indonesia's Hiren Rhustavito.
Two-time Olympic champion PV Sindhu and former World No.1 Kidambi Srikanth from India have pulled out of the tournament. A week back, both the players lost in their respective opening round encounters at the BWF World Championships 2023. Having been included in the upcoming Hangzhou Asian Games squad, Sindhu and Srikanth will have ample time to prepare for the competition.
Meanwhile, Thailands's Ratchanok Inatanon and Canada's Michelle Li too announced their withdrawals from China Open 2023. Michelle Li suffered an injury in the opening round of World Championships against Thet Htar and retired in the opening few minutes of the opening game. She is likely to stay out of action for few more weeks.
Until now only two pairs across three doubles categories have withdrawn - Chloe Birch/Lauren Smith (women's doubles) and Mathias Thyrri/Amalie Magelund (mixed doubles).
