She won two gold medals at the recently concluded Asian Games.
The recently crowned Asian Games 2023 women's singles champion An Se Young is set to undergo rehabilitation treatment for two to five weeks due to a ruptured tendon near her knee. The Korean World No.1 was diagnosed with a partial rupture of a tendon near her right knee after MRI examination on the September 9 (Monday).
An Se Young defeated Olympic champion Chen Yu Fei in the women's singles final to clinch the gold medal at Asian Games 2023. During the final, she felt pain in her right knee and received treatment for the same in between the match. However, a few matches prior to the final the women's singles shuttler had sustained a small injury and was seen limping in the semifinals.
In an interview with Korean website Chosun.com, An Se Young iterated on her performance in the final, “I could have won the game in the second game, but I intentionally gave it away and used a strategy to go to the 3rd. It wasn’t my normal performance because of my sore knee, but I gritted my teeth and held on, thinking only about winning.”
With this, the Korean is likely to be out of action for over a month and could be back to action in the second half of November. With the World Tour final scheduled to be held in December she will look to play the tournament with full fitness and garner maximum ranking points for Paris Olympics 2024.
At the Asian Games, An Se Young won two gold medals after leading South Korea to gold in women's team event and also winning the women's singles title in individual events. She also became the first Korean to clinch a gold medal since Bang Soo-Hyun in 1994 Hiroshima Games.
