The BWF French Open 2023 Badminton tournament, hosted annually in France since 1909, is a historical event in the world of badminton. Organized by the Federation Francaise de Badminton (FFBad), this competition has seen significant evolution and numerous champions over the decades. In this comprehensive article, we delve into the tournament's rich history, highlighting key milestones, notable winners, and the growth of its prestige within the global badminton circuit.
The French Open's journey hasn't been without interruptions. It took place annually until 1914, paused during 1915-1934, and experienced further disruptions in 1965, 1970, 1972, 1994, and 2006. Initially, this tournament didn't enjoy the status of a premier international badminton event.
In 2007, the French Open achieved a significant milestone by being included in the BWF Super Series, elevating its status to one of the 12 most prestigious badminton tournaments globally. This recognition marked a turning point in the event's history.
Since 2018, the French Open has been classified by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) as one of the five BWF World Tour Super 750 events, as per the BWF event structure.
In the early years, English players dominated the sport, consistently winning the championships. However, in 1956, AC Bahree made history as the first Indian to secure the French Open Badminton title, partnering with C.L. Yap from the Federation of Malaya (now Malaysia) to clinch the Men's Doubles championship.
The year 1983 marked a remarkable performance for India at the French Open Championship. Vimal Kumar emerged as the men's singles champion, clinching the coveted title. The dynamic duo of Partho Ganguly and Vikram Singh also secured the men's doubles title, adding to India's prestigious victories.
Notably, in the latest edition, held in 2022, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty emerged as the men's doubles defending champions, continuing their impressive streak in the tournament.
