Satwik-Chirag and Thulasimathi are the Indian’s in fray.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) unveiled the nominees for the Player of the Year Awards 2023 on Tuesday, November 21. Top athletes from the season will be celebrated at the esteemed BWF Player of the Year Awards 2023 in Hangzhou, China, slated for December 11th. The ceremony is set to take place during the annual HSBC BWF World Tour Finals Gala Dinner.
The nominees, divided into eight categories include three dedicated to Para badminton, were ratified by the BWF Council. Selections were based on performances spanning the 2022-23 season starting from from November 1, 2022, to October 31, 2023. Meanwhile, the recipient for Eddy Choong Most Promising Player award will also be announced during the event.
Among the nominees stands Olympic and world champion Viktor Axelsen, who secured six titles in the current season, notably claiming three Super 1000 crowns. Additionally, Korean Seo Seung Jae, the first male player in 24 years to clinch double titles at the BWF World Championships and Kunlavut Vitidsarn, BWF World Championships men’s singles winner, stand as noteworthy contenders.
Moreover, the lineup includes the world’s top-ranked Korean Shuttler, An Se Young, Chinese athlete Chen Yu Fei, and world No. 2 Akane Yamaguchi. The latter two, securing three titles from four consecutive finals in the early part of the assessment period, have been shortlisted for the Female Player of the Year Awards 2023.
Indian badminton duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, ranked 13th in the BWF World Tour rankings with 69,240 points, have been nominated for the Pair of the Year Awards. They are in contention alongside three doubles pairs – Chinese women’s doubles pairs Chen Quin Chen/Jia Yi Fan and Zheng Si Wei/Huang Ya Qiong, as well as Korean Seo Seung Jae/Chae Yu Jung.
In the female Para-Badminton Player of the Year Award category, Thulasimathi Murugesan, ranked second globally in WD SL3-SU5, has received a nomination among five other contenders.
