Priyanshu Rajawat is the lone Indian singles player to reach semi-final stage.
The ongoing Syed Modi International 2023 is reaching its business end with the semifinals commencing on December 2nd. DD Sports on Friday (December 1) made an official announcement of broadcasting the event in India. The tournament currently is unavailable for audience in India and now DD Sports has come forward to broadcast the event from the semifinals stage.
India had sent the largest contingent in the competition but only three players/pairs progressed to the quarterfinals. Youngsters Priyanshu Rajawat after losing four successive matches on BWF World Tour has stamped his authority in front of his home fans.
He beat world junior champion Alwi Farhan to reach the semifinals. This is his first semifinals appearance post reaching the last four at the Australian Open – two months back. Former world no.1 Kidambi Srikanth exited in the opening round and finished the current season on a poor note. Meanwhile, the women’s singles contingent put up a poor performance as none progressed to the quarterfinals.
In the doubles category, Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto went ahead to the semifinals by getting the better of higher seed Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Pullela Gopichand. The latter had a golden opportunity of finishing the season on a high but now continue their poor patch of form. They will now need to rejuvenate ahead of the upcoming season.
Kenta Nishimoto who finished runners-up last week at China Masters continued his form here beating fifth seed Lin Chun-Yi in straight games (21-10, 21-10). Former world no.1 Nozomi Okhuhara and Aya Ohori had an eventful day with upset wins over their respective opponents.
