Two-time Olympic medalist most probably will miss out from qualifying for BWF World Tour Finals.
In a significant setback for Indian badminton enthusiasts, the country’s star shuttler, Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, has withdrawn from the upcoming Syed Modi International 2023 in Lucknow. This BWF World Tour Super 300 event is scheduled to take place from November 28th to December 3rd, 2023.
PV Sindhu had previously withdrawn from the French Open 2023 due to an injury to her left knee during a match against Supanida Kaethong in pre-quarterfinals. Consequently, she also opted out from participating in the Japan and China Masters. The home tournament in Lucknow was anticipated to mark her comeback, and her name appeared in the entry list published last week.
Former world champion and defending champion of the Syed Modi International, was expected to defend her title after a triumphant campaign in the last edition where she defeated fellow compatriot Malvika Bansod (21-13, 21-16) to break her title drought.
She was gradually regaining form this season, displaying improved speed, court coverage, and smashes. Unfortunately, another injury setback disrupted her return to form. It’s worth noting that Sindhu faced a hamstring injury last year following her Commonwealth Games victory, causing her to miss the latter part of the season.
Notable withdrawals from the tournament also include Ng Tze Yong (Malaysia), Pai Yu Po (Chinese Taipei), Aditi Bhatt (India), Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi (Malaysia), and Ye Hong Wei/Lee Chia Hsin (Chinese Taipei). This development has left fans eagerly awaiting PV Sindhu’s return to action.
