The Danish star won the Japan Masters last week.
World No.1 Viktor Axelsen, following his title run at the Japan Masters 2023 men’s singles last week, has surpassed Lin Dan and Chen Long to secure the second spot in the all-time list of total titles won in Superseries (SS) and BWF World Tour equivalent (L1-L4) combined. These World Tour events encompass BWF 500, 750, 1000, and World Tour Final events.
Previously tied with China’s Chen Long and Lin Dan at 22 titles each, Axelsen’s win over Shi Yuqi in the Japan Masters finals propelled him into second place. However, closing the gap to the top spot will be a considerable feat, as Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei boasts 47 titles – a significant 24 more than Axelsen’s current count.
The BWF World Tour was established in 2018, before which tournaments were categorized under Superseries divisions. The BWF World Tour comprises six levels: World Tour Finals, Super 1000, Super 750, Super 500, and Super 300, all part of the HSBC World Tour. Prior to the World Tour, the BWF Super Series was a series of Grade 2 tournaments, including the Super Series Premier and Super Series categories.
From the list provided below, except for Viktor Axelsen, all other players primarily competed in the Super Series format. Axelsen clinched his first World Tour title in 2018 at the Malaysia Masters – Super 500. His dominance this season has been evident with six BWF World Tour titles, all either 750 or 1000, showcasing his consistency at the pinnacle of competition.
Lee Chong Wei secured his lone World Tour title at the Malaysia Open – BWF 750 in 2018. However, the subsequent year saw the BWF Hall of Fame inductee retire due to nasal cancer.
