Carolina Marin has pulled out due to Flu.

The badminton season gets underway in 2024 with the Malaysia Open 2024 which will be held at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur from January 9 to 14. However, the tournament will be missing some of the top stars of the sport, who have withdrawn due to various reasons.

The most prominent absentee is Carolina Marin, the former Olympic champion and former world number one in women’s singles. The Spanish star announced on X, formerly Twitter that she had tested positive for influenza A and was recovering at home.

Another notable miss is Nozomi Okuhara, the 2017 world champion and 2019 runner-up in women’s singles. The Japanese star, who is ranked 26 in the world, has also pulled out of the tournament, citing personal reasons. Okuhara, who won the 2023 Syed Modi International and 2023 Odisha Masters, was expected to be one of the main contenders for the title in Kuala Lumpur.

The mixed doubles event will also be without the services of the ace Danish duo Mathias Christensen and Alexandra Boje, ranked tenth in the world. The pair won the 2023 Singapore Open and the 2023 Spain Masters.

Despite the absence of some top stars, such as Carolina Marin and Nozomi Okuhara, the tournament will feature some exciting players, such as Viktor Axelsen, An Se-young, and H.S. Prannoy.

The Malaysia Open will feature a strong field of Asian and European players. The tournament is also the first of the three Super 1000 events of the year, along with the All-England Open and the Indonesia Open.
