There’s no Indian in contention in women’s singles and mixed doubles.
The Indian men’s singles players faced a tough draw at the BWF India Open 2024, as they were all grouped in the same quarter with some of the world’s best players. Meanwhile, no female player from India could make it to the main draw of women’s singles.
The Yonex Sunrise India Open is a Super 750 event part of the HSBC BWF World Tour series, which was upgraded last year. The top global badminton stars will compete at the IG Stadium (KD Jadhav Indoor hall) from January 16th-21th, 2024.
India’s top ranked men’s singles shuttler, HS Prannoy, is scheduled to meet Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen in the opening round. Meanwhile, Lakshya Sen, who clinched the title in 2022, will take on his compatriot Priyanshu Rajawat in the first round and the winner will likely face H.S Prannoy in the second round. Former world Champion Viktor Axelsen will begin his campaign against Wang Tzu Wei from Chinese Tapei.
In the women’s draw, An Se Young will be the top seed in the tournament. The world no.1 will clash with the experienced Ratchanik Intanon in the opener. None of the Indian woman could qualify for the main draw in the women’s singles event. This is not only a huge setback for the country, but also a wake-up call for everyone, to assess the current situation, where no new talent in women’s singles is emerging.
There will be no mixed doubles team from India at the India Open 2024. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty will be the sole team in men’s doubles, while Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand, and Ashwini Ponnappa/Tanisha Crasto will feature in women’s doubles.
