This is their maiden season as a pair in the BWF World Tour.
India’s women’s doubles duo of Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto reached a personal best rank of WR-24 in the latest BWF rankings released on Tuesday (December 12). The pair made a climb of four spots after clinching the Guwahati Masters title and currently have accumulated a total 44,590 points. The young duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand remain stationary in the 19th spot.
Ashwini and Tanisha have done exceedingly well in their maiden season as a pair. The last few months in particular have been outstanding as they won their first BWF World Tour title at Abu Dhabi Masters 2023 in October. Prior to this, the Indian pair had clinched the Nantes International Challenge in Reze, France.
Their first major success came during the Syed Modi International (BWF 300) where they reached the final. The duo continued from there and won the Guwahati Masters without losing a single game throughout the tournament. In the Paris Olympics 2024 qualification cycle, Ashwini-Tanisha are ranked 28th – three rungs below Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand.
In the women’s singles category, Malvika Bansod rose up to WR-51, making a climb of seven spots. She was the only Indian to reach the semifinals in women’s singles last week and a similar performance at Odisha Masters will see her re-enter the top 50s. Meanwhile, her compatriot Aakarshi Kashyap dropped down to WR-40.
The major gainer in men’s singles is old warehouse Sameer Verma who went up to 75th spot – jumping 16 places. Asian Games bronze medallist, HS Prannoy, continues to remain inside the top-10 spot with former youth Olympian Lakshya Sen jumping a spot to WR-16.
