Several teams have fielded second-fiddle sides
The Badminton Asia Team Championships 2024, which will be held from February 13 to 19 in Shah Alam, Malaysia, is a biennial event that started in 2016 by Badminton Asia. The tournament will serve as the Asian qualifiers for the Thomas & Uber Cups, the prestigious team championships in badminton. The venue for the tournament is the same as the previous edition in 2020.
The tournament is often considered as a secondary event by the top Asian badminton nations, who tend to rest their star players and field their second-string teams. China, for instance, has a record of skipping the tournament or sending a weakened squad. Indonesia, on the other hand, has dominated the men’s team event, winning three gold medals and one silver medal in the four editions so far. Japan and South Korea have been the main contenders in the women’s team event, winning medals in all the editions.
Only four countries have won the gold medal in either the men’s or the women’s team event at the Badminton Asia Team Championships: Malaysia, China, Japan, and Indonesia. Japan and Indonesia are the only ones to have won more than one gold medal. India, meanwhile, has not won any medal in the women’s team event, and has only won two bronze medals in the men’s team event. India is tied with Thailand at the sixth place in the overall medal tally for the Badminton Asia Team Championships.
