Indonesia are only country to have won championship in every edition.

India and Japan are emerging as top contenders for the men’s team title at the Badminton Asia Team Championships 2024. India’s impressive lineup includes World Championship medalists HS Prannoy and Lakshya Sen, along with Asian Games men’s doubles champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty.

On the other hand, Japan fields a formidable team featuring two-time world champion Kento Momota, Kenta Nishimoto, and Kodai Naraoka, who is the highest-ranked men’s singles player in the competition at number six.

The event, scheduled to be held from February 13-18, serves as the Asian qualifier for this year’s Thomas and Uber Cups – the badminton world men’s and women’s team championships – in Chengdu, People’s Republic of China, from April 28 to May 5.

Despite the absence of singles stars Jonatan Christie and Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, Indonesia aims to maintain their dominance. They remain a formidable force in doubles with Muhammad Shohibul Fikri, Bagas Maulana, Leo Rolly Carnando, and Daniel Marthin in their ranks.

Eager to retain the men’s title on home soil, Malaysia, led by Lee Zii Jia, presents a strong challenge for the championship. Their squad includes 2022 doubles world champions Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik. In the women’s event, two-time winners Japan are also vying for glory, with Aya Ohori leading the Japanese challenge alongside the world number six pairing of Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida.

The tournament has an element of surprise due to the absence of 2022 silver medalists, Korea, caused by an injury to world number one An Se Young. Despite China’s tendency not to send their biggest names, the Chinese women, led by top-ranked players Han Yue and Wang Zhiyi, remain among the favorites. The squad also includes Malaysia Open winners Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning, indicating a strong performance from the Chinese women.

With three championship titles from the men’s team (2016, 2018, 2020) and the women’s team being the defending champions from 2022, Indonesia stands as the most successful country at this event.
