Yamaguchi helped Japan win the Uber Cup after 37 years.

If you’re a fan of badminton, regardless of your country, you would likely be an admirer of Akane Yamaguchi. The 26-year-old has been a sensation ever since she burst onto the scene, dominating her opponents and clinching titles. From a young age, Yamaguchi was dubbed a badminton prodigy. At three years-old, she held a racquet for the first time and by five, she was competing.

By the age of 15, she had become the youngest athlete to join the Japanese national team. She made history as the youngest player and the first Japanese athlete to win the singles title at the YONEX Open in 2013. In 2018, she became the first Japanese player to be ranked No. 1 in the world rankings. That same year, she contributed to Japan’s Uber Cup victory, their first in 37 years.
