BWF Arctic Open 2024 will see over 336 players compete in five events.

The BWF Arctic Open 2024 will be starting in a day as the top shuttlers are ready for blockbuster matches. The tournament made its debut on the BWF tour in 1990 and this year marks the 24th edition. The BWF world tour Super 500 series event will be the 25th competition on the tour as the Badminton stars will take a short break from the Asian swing.

In the men’s singles main draw, eight of the top ten ranked players will be featuring in the event. Jonatan Christie will be the top ranked player and has lost two successive semi-finals at Hong Kong and China. Coming in at number two is defending champion, Lee Zii Jia who is on a two-match losing streak.

One of the most awaited arrivals on the courts will be of Lakshya Sen. He will be playing his first match since the Paris Olympics 2024. Sen is expected to play against Rasmus Gemke of Denmark in the opening round at Vantaa. Gemke had won the event in 2017 as the Indian fans will hope that Sen puts up an impressive performance.

In the women’s singles main draw, the top two seeds are from China. Wang Zhi Yi will be leading the attack and had clinched the China Open title two weeks back. Defending champion, Han Yue is looking to become the first player to win successive titles in women’s singles. Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung is the third seed who suffered early exits at Hong Kong and China last month.

The women’s singles will also welcome the return of PV Sindhu onto the tour. She will be seen on courts in Vantaa for the first time since Paris. The 29-year-old had reached the quarter-finals of the event last season while losing to Wang Zhi Yi. This time Sindhu will be arriving with a new coach, Anu Sridhar by her side. Sindhu is expected to open her campaign against Michelle Li of Canada.

The Indian squad will see strong representation in the singles draw especially in the women’s event. There will be no Indians in the men’s doubles as Chirag Shetty/ Satwiksairaj Rankireddy had withdrawn from the event on September 16. As of 2024, Indian players have not won any of the five events at Vantaa since its inception in 1990.
