Malaysian badminton stars look to secure Olympic berths.
The Badminton Asia Championships, a premier event in the sport, has been held annually since 1962. The 41st edition is scheduled to be hosted by China, commencing on April 9th and concluding on April 14th. The tournament will feature five categories: Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.
In addition to vying for the championship, players will aim to secure a spot in the Paris Olympics, with selections based on the rankings as of April 28th, 2024. Malaysia, striving to maintain its status as a badminton powerhouse, will showcase its top players at the Badminton Asia Championships.

Lee Zii Jia
Malaysia continues to produce champion badminton players, and Lee Zii Jia is a once-in-a-generation talent. Touted as the next Lee Chong Wei, the Malaysian has displayed composure, and his power has been one of the talking points of his game. The 26-year-old is not new to the Badminton Asia Championships, as he took home the top prize in the Men’s Singles in 2022.
Zii Jia will look to repeat this feat and, more so, overcome the Indian player jinx, as it was the Indians who knocked him out in his last two tournaments.
Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik
The duo of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik is on a dream run, winning championships for fun. It all started at the 2022 Badminton Asia Championships with a silver medal finish. They went one better by winning the 2022 World Championships, and since then, they find themselves on the podium more often than not.
The Malaysian duo would like to finish on a high as they are seeded No. 4 and have a relatively easy draw to make it to the top four.

Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi
While the team of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik will be the primary contenders from Malaysia in the Men’s Doubles event, there is another duo that has some unfinished business. The duo of Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi missed the gold at the 2023 Badminton Asia Championships by a whisker as they lost in the final.
They will look to go one better not only to win gold here but also to break their finals jinx. The last gold they won was at the 2020 Thailand Masters Super 300 event.
Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan
The pair of Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan will be competing in the Women’s Doubles event. The duo has been consistent on the circuit in the last two years. They won gold in the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the French Open. The following year saw them lose two finals as they came in second best at the Malaysian Masters and the Hong Kong Open.
