Tanvi Sharma and Rounak Chouhan will lead the Indian contingent at the Badminton Asia Junior Championships 2025.

The 25th edition of the Badminton Asia Junior Mixed Team Championships will take place at Manahan Indoor Sports Hall, Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. The competition is divided into two parts: a mixed team and an individual event. The individual competition will be held from July 23 to July 27.

The Indian team will look to win a medal in the individual category, after a crushing defeat in the mixed event to Japan in the quarter-finals. Considering the draw, our best possible chance for a medal is Tanvi Sharma, the 16-year-old who recently won the US Open title. A lot of hopes rest on her to end the medal drought. Rujula Ramu is another player who can get a medal.

It will be interesting to see how the doubles teams perform, especially since they did well in the team event.

India’s history

Only two Indians have won the Badminton Asia Junior Championships so far. These were PV Sindhu in 2012 and Lakshya Sen in 2018. In 2011, Sameer Verma clinched the silver medal, becoming the first men’s singles player from India to win a medal, and he followed it up with a bronze medal at the 2012 edition.

So far, India has won medals in only two men’s singles and one women’s singles events. Lakshya won his first medal, a bronze, in 2016, and Sindhu also won a bronze in 2011.

Apart from singles, the only doubles pair to win a medal was Pranav Chopra and Prajakta Sawant, who won bronze in 2009. They also became the first individual medalists from India.

Param Chaudhary, who was earlier named in the squad, has been injured and has been replaced by C Lalramsanga, who will pair up with Bhavya Chhabra in men’s doubles.
