Danish badminton superstar Viktor Axelsen has officially withdrawn from the Badminton European Championships 2025, leaving fans disappointed. As one of the most dominant players in modern badminton, Axelsen’s absence is a significant blow to the tournament.
The primary reason behind Axelsen’s withdrawal is his recovery from back surgery. The former world champion has been struggling with back issues for some time, and to ensure his long-term fitness, he underwent surgery earlier this year. Given the physical demands of professional badminton, rushing back into competition could risk further injury, making his decision to withdraw a precautionary measure.
The two-time Olympic champion himself confirmed the news on social media, stating that his rehabilitation is progressing well but not at a stage where he can compete at full intensity. The Dane has always emphasized the importance of maintaining peak physical condition, and skipping the European Championships aligns with his goal of long-term success.

Not the first time Viktor Axelsen has withdrawn
This is not the first time Axelsen has had to miss the European Championships. In 2021, he withdrew after reaching the final due to a positive COVID-19 test. Due to which the championship went to Anders Antonsen for the first time in his career. Last year, he had to pull out mid-tournament due to an illness during the second round against Alex Lanier.
Axelsen, however, has dominated the tournament for a very long time. His first medal in the form of bronze came in 2012 at the Championships. After which he has won a total of 8 medals, including 3 Gold in 2016, 2018, and 2022. He also won the Gold in the 2023 European Games.
How his absence affects the tournament
With Axelsen out of the competition, the men’s singles draw becomes wide open. Several top European players, including Anders Antonsen, Christo Popov, Toma Junior Popov, and Alex Lanier, will see this as an opportunity to claim the title.
For Denmark, Axelsen’s withdrawal means the country will be banking on players like Rasmus Gemke, Anders Antonsen, and Magnus Johannesen, who could emerge as strong contenders for the title.
When will Axelsen return?
Although the surgery went well, there is no official timeline for Axelsen’s return to competition. He has stated that he will be out for several weeks to prioritize his rehabilitation. His comeback will depend on how well he recovers and the recommendations of his medical team.
