Home favourite Wang Zhiyi from China leads the field as top seed.

The BWF World Tour Finals 2024, set to begin on December 11 in Hangzhou, China, brings together the top seven players from the World Tour Rankings, along with the Olympic champion, all competing for a grand prize of $2.5 million.

For a long time, the women’s singles category in badminton has been dominated by a few key players. However, with the absence of former champions Tai Tzu Ying, Chen Yufei, and Olympic champion Carolina Marin, the field is more open than ever, adding an exciting twist to this year’s tournament.

China’s Wang Zhiyi leads the pack as the number one seed after a stellar season, while Olympic champion An Se Young aims to cap off an extraordinary year with another title. The tournament also features Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi, a former winner of the BWF World Tour Finals, making the competition even more thrilling.

That said, let’s dive into the top five contenders vying for the prestigious women’s singles crown at the year-end finale:

5. Han Yue

The second seed and home favourite, Han Yue, has had an impressive 2024, securing titles at the Hong Kong Open and Arctic Open, both Super 500 events. She also reached the final of the Thailand Open. Despite her achievements, Han is yet to claim a BWF World Tour Finals title. Performing in front of her home crowd, she will be eager to break this barrier and clinch the year-end trophy.

4. Gregoria Mariska Tunjung

The Paris Olympic bronze medalist, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, has always been a formidable opponent. Although the Indonesian’s 2024 season lacked major titles, her resilience and ability to challenge top players make her a dark horse in the competition. As the third seed, she could surprise everyone and secure her first-ever BWF World Tour Finals title.

3. Akane Yamaguchi

The two-time world champion and 2022 BWF World Tour Finals winner, Akane Yamaguchi, remains a strong contender. With two title wins at the Japan Open and Japan Masters, as well as runner-up finishes at the All England Open and French Open, Yamaguchi has shown her ability to thrive in high stakes matches. The Japanese will undoubtedly be a force to reckon with in this tournament.

2. Wang Zhiyi

China’s Wang Zhiyi enters the tournament as the top seed following a remarkable 2024 season. With victories at the Indonesia Masters, Malaysia Masters, Denmark Open, and the Super 1000 China Open, she has proven her mettle against the best. Performing on home soil will provide her with additional motivation to claim the coveted title and further cement her status as a top player.

1. An Se Young

The reigning Olympic champion and current world number one, An Se Young, is the clear favourite to win the title. With an exceptional 2024 season, including victories at the Malaysia Open, Singapore Open, French Open, and China Masters, she has dominated the tour.

Having previously won the BWF World Tour Finals in 2021, the player from Korea will look to add another prestigious accolade to her already impressive resume.

The countdown for the BWF World Tour Finals has begun, and it’s only a matter of time before the action unfolds. Whether or not players like Supanida Katethong, Aya Ohori, or Busanan Ongbamrungphan manage to claim the title, one thing is certain: the battle among the world’s top players will be an absolute treat for fans.
