By advancing to the semis, Satwik-Chirag also confirmed a medal for India.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty confirmed a medal at the ongoing BWF World Championships 2025 after storming into the semi-finals, following straight games win over nemesis Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik on Malaysia.

The Indian men’s doubles pair, who had lost to the same opponents at the same venue in the Paris Olympics quarter-finals last year, produced perhaps their best performance of the season to advance to the semis and assure a second BWF World Championships medal for themselves.

Satwik and Chirag dominated the opening game before showing composure under pressure to close out the second game despite a late Malaysian surge.

En toute they also helped extend India’s streak of winning at least one medal in every edition of the competition since 2011. However, that said, Satwik-Chirag will hoe to better their bronze medal performance from 2022 when they face Chen Bo Yang and Liu Yi for a place in the final.

The Indians hold a psychological advantage, having defeated the Chinese pair in straight sets at their only previous meeting during the Thailand Open 2024.

PV Sindhu’s campaign ends in quarter-final heartbreak

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu’s championship run came to an abrupt end as she fell to a 14-21, 21-13, 16-21 defeat against Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani in the women’s singles quarter-finals.

After losing the opening game, Sindhu fought back brilliantly to level the match in the second game. The game set was close till the interval.

However, the decider proved decisive as the Indonesian maintained her composure in the crucial moments towards the end.

The defeat marks another quarter-final exit for Sindhu at the World Championships, continuing her search for a first medal at the tournament since claiming Gold in 2019.

In the mixed doubles category, Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto’s groundbreaking campaign concluded with a 15-21, 13-21 defeat to Malaysia’s Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei in the quarter-finals.

The Indian pair, who had created history by becoming the first Indian mixed doubles duo in seven years to reach the World Championships quarter-finals, couldn’t extend their remarkable journey against the experienced Malaysian combination.

Despite the loss, Dhruv and Tanisha’s performance throughout the tournament has set a new benchmark for Indian mixed doubles.

With Sindhu and the Dhruv-Tanisha bowing out, India’s challenge now entirely rests on Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty in the men’s doubles semi-finals.

The duo has been in outstanding form throughout the tournament, and their revenge win over the Olympic quarter-final opponents has further boosted their confidence.

A semi-final victory would guarantee at least a silver and keep alive the dream of a historic first World Championships gold in men’s doubles.

Whom did Satwik-Chirag defeat to enter the semi-finals?

They beat Malaysia’s world No. 2 seeds Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in straight sets (21-12, 21-19).

Who will Satwik-Chirag face in the semi-finals?

They will face China’s Chen Bo Yang and Liu Yi, the No. 11 seeds.
