Earlier, Lee Zii Jia also withdrew from Malaysia Open.

World number #6 Lee Zii Jia has pulled out of both the India Open and the Indonesia Masters after withdrawing from the Malaysia Open which extends his absence from competitive badminton due to persistent ankle problems.

The 26-year-old bronze medalist suffered a right ankle ligament injury during the BWF World Tour Finals in December 2024, which made him skip the $1.5 million Malaysia Open—due to be held from 9 to 14 January 2025.

Earlier, Team Lee Zii Jia put the official statement declaring his absence from Malaysia Open. It read: “It is with a heavy heart to announce that Lee Zii Jia would not be able to appear at the BWF World Tour 2025 season opener and home tournament, the Malaysia Open.

“Zii Jia unfortunately has not fully recovered from the Right Ankle Ligament injury sustained during the BWF World Tour Finals back in December 2024.

His participation for the India Open and Indonesia Masters scheduled in January 2025 are also under consideration, pending to his full recovery.”

Now, the acceptance list for the Indian Open and Indonesia Masters that the public reads has also confirmed that Zii Jia has withdrawn from these two tournaments as well.

The frustrating setback with injuries has come at a critical moment for Lee who, in December 2024, parted ways with coach Wong Tat Meng after 18 months stay together that saw him win several titles, including the Thailand Open and the Australia Open last year.

Along with individual successes, Lee’s 2024 season has pitched toward ups and lows. He clinched two BWF World Tour titles as well as won bronze for Malaysia at the Olympic Games in 2024 after a stunning comeback from behind, defeating India’s Lakshya Sen 13-21, 21-16, and 21-11.

However, injuries beyond his control limited him to having any semblance of a consistent year; he withdrew from the quarterfinals of the Indonesia Masters against Brian Yang due to food poisoning.

He also withdrew from the first round in Singapore. A foot injury during the final of the Malaysia Masters against Viktor Axelsen affected his performance, losing 6-21, 22-20, 13-21

In that regard, the withdrawal from these three prominent tournaments—Malaysia Open (Super 1000), India Open (Super 750), and Indonesia Masters (Super 500)—could delay his position and momentum at the beginning of the 2025 season.

With the Malaysia Open now out of the picture, Jun Hao is now Malaysia’s only representative left in men’s singles.
