Defending champion Anders Antonsen will eye a strong start to 2025.

The badminton world’s attention shifts to Malaysia this week as the Malaysia Open 2025 begins on January 7. Following the prestigious World Tour Finals last month, the Super 1000 tournament marks the first major BWF World Tour event of the year.

Among the participants are defending champion Anders Antonsen, world number #1 Shi Yuqi, and two-time Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen. However, Malaysia’s top player, Lee Zii Jia, will miss the Malaysia Open due to an unresolved ankle injury. This news is particularly disappointing, as the Paris bronze medallist and tournament’s number 6 seed would have been eager to compete on his home court.

There’s positive news for Indian fans as HS Prannoy will return to the World Tour. Prannoy had been facing health issues post the Olympics last year. The Indian had last participated in the Paris Olympics 2024 where he had lost to fellow shuttler Lakshya Sen in the Round of 16.

In the women’s section, the number 1 seed and defending champion An Se-young will look to defend her title. Last month, the Korean star was defeated by Wang Zhiyi of China in the semifinals of the World Tour Finals. Wang, who went on to win the tournament, is the number 2 seed in the Malaysia Open.

As the first major event of the year, the Malaysia Open is set to deliver an exciting array of matches from some of the world’s best athletes.
