Malaysian sensation Lee Zii Jia misses out on home tournament.
Malaysia’s top badminton star Lee Zii Jia leads a considerable contingent that will not attend the Malaysia Open 2025, which is set to begin on January 9 at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur.
Lee, whose last-minute withdrawal is due to an ankle injury, called it quits with Wong Tat Meng, his coach of 18 months, in December 2024. The partnership was instrumental in winning various titles and an Olympic bronze medal.
The Japanese women’s singles star Akane Yamaguchi leads women’s withdrawals, while the significant Japanese men’s doubles pair Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi withdraw.
The Indonesian pairs of Bagas and Leo roll, Carnando and Muhammad Shohibul fend off to leave. The $1.5 million tournament, that pays $120,000 to singles champions, saw numerous withdrawals across the board in all five categories.
In women’s singles, Olympic contenders Line Hojmark Kjaertefeldt, Supanida Katethong, and Michelle Li have all withdrawn. The mixed doubles event has lost Thai top pair Supak Jomkoh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai.
Lee Zii Jia’s absence leaves Leong Jun Hao as the only representative from Malaysia in men’s singles in the event in which no local player has been able to win since Lee Chong Wei’s victory in 2018.

Despite the withdrawals, the tournament embraces its star power in Viktor Axelsen, number one in the world and Shi Yuqi of China who are set to lead the men’s singles field.
As far as India is concerned, there will be a strong Indian contingent, including HS Prannoy, who is making a return after missing action since the Paris Olympics, and the young gun Lakshya Sen, who is fresh from his victory at the Syed Modi International.
